God Is the Original Promise Keeper: Lessons from Parashat Noach

Myles Weiss

In uncertain times, this week’s Torah portion—Noach (Noah)—brings us back to an unchanging truth: God is the original promise keeper.

The story of Noah is far more than an ark and a storm; it is a powerful blueprint of divine judgment, redemption, and covenant faithfulness.

A Lineage of Promise

In Genesis 6, Noah is introduced as an Ish Tzaddik—a righteous man. God preserved Noah and his family through the flood, saving a remnant of eight people. In Scripture, eight represents new beginnings.

Through Noah came Shem, Abraham, and eventually Yeshua (Jesus), the Savior of the world. One man’s obedience kept God’s ultimate plan of salvation intact.

Pictures of Hope for Today

Jesus warned that before His return, life would mirror "the days of Noah". Yet at the end of the flood narrative, God gives us three enduring symbols of hope:

  • The Dove: The Holy Spirit, offering peace and divine guidance.
  • The Olive Branch: Israel, symbolizing life and covenant restoration.
  • The Rainbow: God's unbroken promise spanning the sky.

Choosing the Light

Humanity faces the same choice today: will we follow the darkness of our own way, or turn toward the Holy Spirit, embrace God's covenant, and look toward the Coming King?

No matter how deep the waters get around us, God's promises never fail.
